Valentine’s Day is Around The Corner
What’s your favorite month of the year? I know I’m going to say July ‘coz that’s my birth month and probably you would too. But believe me when I say this, that for many people, one particular month of the year is most awaited even if it’s NOT their birth month. I’m talking about February – the lovers’ month! And it is called so because of Valentine’s Day – the 14th of February.
When was the last time one of your friends asked you, “What’s your plan for Valentine’s this year?” If you were me, I who would be particularly excited during the last week of January – the reason being the forthcoming Valentine’s Day when they would be treated like princesses and queens by their lovers or spouses. For some, it is even more awaited as they expect to be wooed or proposed on V-Day. That’s the nick-name coined for it and on this day each year, flowers, chocolates, stuffed toys, diamonds and many such gift items are hugely in demand. Businesses boom and love is in the air!
If you step into a shopping mall or a café or even a busy market on V-Day, what will probably strike you first will be the omnipresence of the color red and pink! Heart shaped balloons and decorations adorn the streets and shops and actually make for quite a lovely spectacle. Couples can be seen walking hand-in-hand with everyone dressed at their best for their lovers. Girls holding huge bouquets of red roses and couples enjoying a romantic candle-light dinner are common sights. It’s like everyone suddenly realized the importance of love in their lives on this day! Which pops another very interesting question – why do we need a particular day to express our love? Why can’t it be done on any day of the year? Hmm, I know, good question!
Though this day has been popular since many years, more recently, the movie and television industry has played a huge role in boosting its effect. Lovers wait anxiously for this day to celebrate it in the best way possible. Young boys plan for gifts and the way they’d treat their partners on this day knowing that their partners would expect that their love be acknowledged. For many couples, it is even a matter of pride. I’m serious! Many a times, what girlfriends get most annoyed about is how beautifully their best friends were treated on that day and they weren’t! Well, I believe what’s most important is, the feeling. Everything else just doesn’t matter.
I had a friend in college for whom V-Day held a special memory. Her best friend proposed to her on V-Day most unexpectedly, and she was blown away. Guess cupid had struck the right chords! Which reminds me, do you know about Cupid, the mischievous God of Love? I’m sure you would have heard the name but let me briefly tell you the background behind the theory. I personally love it! Read it in Shakespeare in school.
You must have heard the saying “Love is blind”, but what’s interesting is the link between Cupid and this saying. I know what you’re thinking – I never knew there was a link between the two – well according to Shakespeare, there is. You see, in one of his plays he explains how Cupid is blind. And whoever Cupid shoots love arrow at falls in love! Since he cannot see who he is shooting the arrows at, sometimes, the most oddly paired couples can be seen falling desperately in love, which fuels the saying – “Opposites attract!” And that’s where the saying “Love is blind” comes from.
