It can often be one of the most daunting things that any adult has to face, with our nerves running riot and anxiety often getting the best of us, but how can you reduce the effects of your nervous state and ensure that you provide the best interview that you possibly can? Well here’s a look at the top 10 ways to prepare for your interview so that you can almost guarantee success.

Research the Position

There’s nothing worse than walking into an interview without a clue on the type of role that you’re going for. Whether the organization consists of a few people, or boasts a whole fleet of staff that take care of different tasks; the bottom line is that you’ll want to know what will be expected of you, so look up the role and gain an understanding of what’s involved.

Knowledge of the Company

This point will often go hand in hand with your research, but your knowledge differs slightly in that you’ll want to demonstrate an understanding of the company that you will be working for. Learn a little bit about the company’s ethos, their services and their aims and try to demonstrate that you have an understanding of everything that they provide.

Appearance

Although most positions will require a certain level of professional appearance, it can’t hurt to make a little extra effort on the day of your interview. Styling your hair, wearing a stylish suit or dress and looking as keen and fresh as possible can make all the difference.

Attitude

There’s nothing that employers like to see more than a keen attitude and a willingness to learn. Try to clear all negative thoughts from your mind and focus on the task ahead so that you can really show just how keen you are to work for the company.

Don’t Be Modest

No one likes a show-off, but that’s what an interview is for; to showcase your skills. Make sure that you mention all of your skills, experience and qualifications that may be relevant to your role. Keep things as concise as possible and leave out the little extras if they stray from the needs of the potential role.

Communicate

It’s important that you get your point across correctly, as well as demonstrate an understanding of the questions that you’re being asked. Pronounce your vocabulary properly and avoid mumbling at all costs. You’ll want to show that you will be efficient in any role that you’re taking on, so be sure to clarify things whilst asking for clarification when necessary. Try to keep the conversation flowing in general to fully showcase your potential.

Mind Your Body Language

A person’s body language can say a lot about them, so be sure to sit up straight, make eye contact and sit with your arms placed on either leg to create the feeling of honesty and professionalism. Avoid crossing your arms as this can be seen as a barrier and if there is more than one interviewer in the room, be sure to make eye contact with each of them.

Balance between Personal and Professional

What most interviewees realize a little too late is that their interviewer will want to work with the successful candidate, not just require them to do a good job. Try to communicate in a way that encourages conversation in an open, friendly manner, but without losing out on any of the professionalism in the process. If you are able, try to draw on your own life experiences and share them with your interviewer to open the door for a pleasant working relationship and improve your chances of being hired.

Stay Interested

Employers love it when their potential employees show initiative, so be sure to ask questions, take notes and discuss the role in detail. This is especially the case for smaller companies, but it can apply to larger organizations too. Respond to every question with interest and detail and show that you genuinely care about the role.

Be Yourself

This is one of the most important aspects to consider when you are having an interview. If you’re pretending to be someone else entirely, then the façade will soon fall apart if you are given the role. Just be honest, personal and open and let your interviewer get to know you.

And there you have it, 10 things to help you guarantee success with your interview. Now try to stay positive and focus on these points and you’ll do great!
